Jubilee is a rock'n'roll band from Los Angeles, California that came into existence in early 2007
when Aaron North and Mike Shuman started jamming together. Their approach to creating music is deliberately
free and unrestrained and their concept of a band line-up is deliberately flexible with various friends
contributing to the recording sessions and injecting their individual styles and talents into the band chemistry.
Jubilee is Aaron North, Tony Bevilacqua, Jenni Tarma and Troy Petrey, but also part of it were Robi Gonzalez, Evan Weiss
and Loren Shane Humphrey. And while some of the other contributions may be more punctual in time, they are certainly
decisive in effect to create the multifaceted identity of Jubilee. Also, there's another bunch of people
who help making Jubilee what it is, sonically (engineers, producers) and visually (photographers, designers). Aaron North Aaron North grew up under the musical influence of hardcore bands like the Circle Jerks or Black Flag and joined The Icarus Line on guitar in 1996; over the years, the band evolved from its initial hardcore roots to more sleazy, druggy areas of rock'n'roll embodied in the highly critically acclaimed Penance Soiree. In the meantime, his own musical interest had shifted away from noisy, abrasive rock towards folkier, bluesier songwriters like Neil Young and Bob Dylan, so, when he left the band in late 2004 over personal and artistic differences, he set himself to playing solo gigs, where he’d accompany himself with acoustic guitar and harmonica. He then got recruited as Nine Inch Nails live guitarist, and, with his own blazing and inspired style, added a more organic dimension of vivid energy, thrill and unpredictability to Nine Inch Nails' equation, creating feedback-drenched, otherworldly soundscapes that were reminiscent of Kevin Shields contributions to Primal Scream, XTRMNTR era.During all this time, he had been developing the idea of a musical project that wouldn’t be sonically aggressive, dark and angsty, but uplifting and life-affirming. But it’s only in early 2007, when he went to the Rancho de la Luna with Michael Shuman, in whom he had found a like-minded collaborator, that the project started to turn into "Jubilee". Still defined by then as a mainly acoustic duo, it soon evolved, through the addition of a drummer, and later, of a second guitarist, into something pretty rock'n'roll, again. When the NIN line-up was dissolved in autumn 2007, Aaron North was able to dedicate all his time and force to Jubilee's music, leading to the release of the self-produced single Rebel Hiss and the first live tour in january 2008, followed by the second single In With The Out Crowd, an extensive tour of the UK in summer/autumn 2008 and two shows in California. In the current configuration of Jubilee, he's co-fronting the band, handles most of the vocal duties, and plays the electric guitar (with such exceptions, live, as "Pioneers Get Shot With Arrows" and "Color Me Archaic"), at times playing lead, at times doubling in rhythm, and at times soundscaping and ornamenting. Pete Townshend, eat your heart out ! Tony Bevilacqua coming soonJenni Tarma coming soonTroy "Boy" Petrey Long term contributor to the Buddyhead website and frequent DJ-ing partner of Travis Keller, he played with Aaron North in the seminal days of The Icarus Line, even if he is credited on very few of their recordings (with such notable exceptions, as the Love is Happiness EP where he can be heard on the title song and two b-sides.) When Aaron North and Michael Shuman started the musical collaboration that turned into Jubilee, and became aware that they wished for a drummer to provide the rhythmic backbone to the songs they were in the process of writing, it's Troy Petrey who sat behind the drums, and helped them give their first material incarnation to many future Jubilee songs. He was announced in the summer 2008 as the current "official" drummer of the band, and the one to be part of the upcoming summer/autumn tour(s). Aside from Jubilee, he has been a long time member of the permanently evolving trio Willowbrook. On Jubilee's recordings, he can be heard playing drums on the album version of "Pioneers Get Shot With Arrows" and "L.A.". |
